The vessel is named in honor of First Sergeant John D. Stimson. John Stimson was active in the marine enforcement efforts of the division, but tragically perished January 14th, 1983, while responding to a mayday call.

The P/V Stimson's primary function is the enforcement of commercial fisheries in the Bering Sea and Bristol Bay. Its size and stability allow it to respond year round to Search and Rescue missions, it is equipped for fire fighting and can provide a platform for environmental pollution responses. The vessel can also provide emergency generation and communications in remote locations.
