B Detachment ------------------------------------------------- Location: Palmer Case number: 12-35075 Type: Aircraft Accident Text: On 04-29-2012 at approximately 1747 hours, Alaska State Troopers received a report of an aircraft accident on the Knik River, near Palmer. Investigation revealed a 16 year old male was the pilot and sole occupant of a Piper Super Cub that crashed shortly after taking off from a Knik River sand bar. The pilot was transported by EMS to Mat-Su Regional Hospital with moderate injuries. Drugs or alcohol were not a factor in the crash. Investigation revealed that Thomas Noden age 25 of Wasilla had furnished Alcohol to persons under 21. Noden was subsequently arrested for Furnishing Alcohol To Persons under 21 (4 counts) and Contributing to the Delinquency of a Minor. Noden was transported and remanded to Mat-Su Pretrial facility where he was held on $1,000 bail. Troopers received a report that a 15 year old child has been repeatedly absent from school without just cause. Investigation continues. Albert Slats, Kasey Slates, Leo Pingayak, and Ronnie Pingayak were reported to have left Chevak the morning of 04/28/12 on three snow machines to the mud volcanoes for fishing. They were to return that night but had not yet returned. On 04/29/12 at about 1000 hours, search and rescue team from Chevak and Newtok and troopers in state aircraft were dispatched to the area were the men went fishing. On 04/29/12 at about 1700 hours, all four men were located on Puqlanarvik Lake. The men did not need medical treatment and were able to travel back to Chevak. The Alaska State Troopers would like to thank search and rescue workers from Chevak and Newtok for their efforts in locating the four men. Further investigation revealed Gary Kameroff, age 36, of Marshall assaulted a household member by pushing her down a flight of steps, kicking her, and punching her. Kameroff was arrested and transported to YKCC in Bethel. Further investigation revealed Wassily Sergie, age 43, of Marshall, had the window of his Ford F150 broken and a pack of cigarettes was stolen. Two juveniles that live in the village of Marshall were interviewed and charges will be forwarded against them. Investigation revealed Huntington was driving under the influence of alcohol. Huntington was arrested and transported to AST where she provided a breath sample. While at AST, Huntington assaulted one State Trooper by biting and attempted to bite another State Trooper. Huntington was transported to FCC where she was remanded for DUI, two counts of Assault IV, Minor Operating Vehicle after Consuming Alcohol, and Minor Consuming Alcohol. Further investigation determined Cooper had a warrant for his arrest for assault in the fourth degree and had violated his conditions of release. Investigation revealed Carle was using a skiff for the commercial fishery which did not display 12" ADF&G numbers as required. Carle was cited with bail set at $210 in Sitka District Court. Summers age 56, of Craig, after he landed a lingcod as bycatch in the commercial salmon troll fishery. Lingcod retention is only open May 16-November 30, and Sitka Sound is closed to the retention of lingcod on commercial troll gear. Summers was cited with arraignment set in Sitka Court. The proceeds from the illegally taken lingcod were forfeited to the State. Text: On 4/27/12, Alaska Wildlife Troopers, Sitka Post observed the F/V Yankee operating handtroll gear in closed waters west of the Sitka Sound Winter Troll Line. The vessel did not display any "HT" in conjunction with its ADF&G numbers to signify a Hand Troll vessel and was later found to have an overlimit of hand gurdies on board. The operator and permit holder, William A. Walder Jr., age 51, of Sitka was contacted on 4/28/12, and cited for the above offenses. Proceeds from the sale of fish taken on the trip will be seized by the State of Alaska. Arraignment is set in Sitka Court 5/15/12. Rodd A. Moretz, age 48 from Fairbanks, was approaching a brown bear he had just killed. While approaching the dead animal, he walked past a bear den approximately 100 yards from his kill. A Kodiak brown bear charged out of the den at him. Moretz tried to evade the charging bear; however, the bear pounced on him and both rolled down a hill approximately 50 feet. During the fall, the bear and Moretz separated. Once the two stopped rolling the bear ran back to its den. No shots were fired from Moretz. Moretz was bitten on the head during the brief encounter and received minor scalp injuries. Moretz?s 13 year old son was present during the attack. He fell down in the alders while trying to evade the bear and was not injured. Moretz?s son assisted his father by bandaging the injuries. Moretz was able to skin and salvage the bear he had killed. Moretz was flown out on the morning of the 29th to Kodiak by Andrew Air. Moretz went to ADFG to seal his bear before going to Kodiak Providence for treatment. Stafford was fined $1500 with $1250 suspended and put on probation. The proceeds of the seized fish ticket are due to be determined on 05/30/12 at 0830 hours in a post sentencing hearing in Sitka District Court. Investigation revealed that Bradford Heck age 55 of Wasilla had passed away. The State Medical Examiner responded to the scene taking possession of the body.
