Examples of Duties

State Trooper / State Trooper Recruit:

  • Participates in formal classroom and role playing situations to train in first aid, criminal law, administration of justice, criminal investigation, traffic operations, riot control and other law enforcement subjects
  • Participates in physical training
  • Receives training in methods of arrest, baton, use of firearms and specialized police equipment, offensive and defensive tactics, precision driving, and field techniques

In a training capacity and under immediate supervision:

  • Responds to and interviews principals and witnesses at traffic accidents and administers first aid if necessary
  • Makes general and scale drawings of accident scenes, noting details and completing standard accident and supplemental reports
  • Determines accident cause, issues citations or takes principals into custody as the situation warrants
  • Takes statements and interviews witnesses, as necessary; interrogates suspects, and documents facts collected in an acceptable manner for presentation to a district attorney’s office if the circumstances warrant such action
  • Prepares affidavits for search warrants, applies for and serves search warrants
  • Collects evidence and prepares reports for court review
  • Arrests suspects; prepares arrest warrant or criminal complaint
  • Testifies in court in both civil and criminal cases
  • Enforces fish and game laws and regulations (for example, checking sport and commercial licenses, hunting, trapping, and guiding licenses, subsistence permits, game and fish bag limits, and methods or means of taking fish and game)
  • Investigates criminal and civil complaints including family disputes and reports of maltreatment of children by interviewing persons with complaints or inquiries; provides information on laws and regulations and takes appropriate action
  • Refers victims to appropriate agencies, such as the Department of Health and Social Services, medical authorities, or appropriate domestic violence programs
  • Properly uses specialized police equipment such as cameras, radar, Datamaster, portable breath test equipment, radio, and various defensive and deadly weapons
  • Escorts prisoners both interstate and intrastate; assists attorneys with extradition processing. Operates State vessels, aircraft, patrol cars, and other vehicles such as snow machines, all terrain vehicles, or other motorized equipment in a safe manner under adverse conditions
  • Serves court process including search warrants, warrants of arrest and summonses
  • Completes special duty assignments such as public speaking assignments, undercover work, dignitary escort duty, guarding prisoners in custody, or conducting search and rescue missions
  • Notifies the next of kin and attempts to locate persons in order to convey death, serious injury or illness messages in an effort to reduce shock and to give emotional and physical support through personal or telephone contact, by utilizing friends, relatives or clergy, and applying human relations skills
  • Participates in fugitive hunts. Responds to and assesses emergency situations such as bomb threats, demonstrations and crimes in progress and takes immediate action to neutralize or contain the situation
  • Performs other related duties as assigned
